Attire
We aim to create timeless portraits with presence you can feel... the kind that takes your breath away when you walk into a room.
For many, this becomes the most elegant portrait they will possess in a lifetime. To ensure your portrait ages gracefully across generations we ask that you please dress formally.
The Key to Timeless Portraiture
The attire you select plays a VITAL role in shaping your final artwork. While we carefully arrange our lighting, background, and other details to maintain specific fine art principles, we rely on your wardrobe styling for the overall tone.
In general, we suggest that you wear dark clothing. Your attire should soften gently into the background and allow the light to reflect primarily off the face and eyes. When your complexion forms the brightest part of the canvas it will naturally captivate the viewer's gaze.
In order to create a look that endures as a work of art, the following is what we have found to be most successful:
-
Formal or semi-formal attire
-
Solid colors in, dark or jewel tones
-
Simple, classic jewelry
-
Formal footwear
-
Men and boys with two upper layers
Other timeless looks may include: Cultural, academic, judicial, religious, or military uniforms. Extra-curricular show uniforms such as riding, dance, fencing, FFA, etc.
When it comes to clothing, the regret we hear most is not having dressed nice enough or wearing something trendy only to have it look dated in a few short years as fashion changes. Rest assured, the effort you invest in wardrobe preparations will pay off in the level of artistry in your final artwork.
Below, you’ll find tailored guidance for ladies, gentlemen, and youth. These suggestions are meant to help you prepare with ease and confidence. Additional tips will be sent to you after your session is scheduled.
Gentlemen
-
A dark tuxedo or suit is the ideal choice
-
Men and boys should coordinate ties when possible.
-
Complement with classic accessories like cufflinks, a handkerchief, or analog watch if desired.
-
Polished dress shoes
Ladies
-
A gown, dress, pant suit, or skirt suit in dark or jewel tones such as black, burgundy, dark green, or navy.
-
Patterns should be very subtle or avoided.
-
White lace around the collar is okay.
-
Fitted long sleeves are highly recommended.
-
Simple, classic jewelry such as diamonds, pearls, or coordinating gemstones are encouraged.
-
Natural hairstyles and matte makeup work best.
-
Complete the look with spectacular shoes.
Young Men
-
Formal or semi-formal wear in similarly dark or jewel-toned colors. The second layer may include a vest or sweater.
-
If under 4, a white shirt and bow tie is appropriate.
-
Avoid suspenders for those under 6 years old.
-
Appropriate length dark socks and dress shoes.
Young Women
-
Dark or jewel toned solid dresses are preferred
-
Ivory, cream or off-white are also acceptable for 4 and under.
-
Short or sleeveless options are usually preferred.
-
Simple, time-honored jewelry, if any.
-
Dressy shoes
If you absolutely must be casual, the remaining guidelines should still be followed for it to be a success. Clothing needs to be dark and solid-colored, not busy. Men and boys should still wear two layers such as a dress shirt with a simple jacket, sweater or vest. Denim must be dark and without tears.
What Not
to Wear
-
Athletic apparel (polos, sweats, baseball hats)
-
Shorts
-
Torn jeans
-
Flip-flops, sandals
-
Logos and graphics
-
Large, busy prints or patterns (stripes, florals, checkers, plaids)
-
Oversized, ill-fitting clothing
-
Bright or pastel colors
-
White (unless under a suit jacket)
-
Avoid overly matching outfits (Coordinate, just don't replicate exactly.)
In order to maintain the integrity of our artistry, only families with proper attire will be photographed.
We reserve the right to reschedule sessions when the attire is not appropriate for our sessions.
